Defense Department reports a “large portion” of potential wind lease areas conflict with operations.
The Department of Defense released its completed assessment this week of offshore wind lease locations proposed by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), noting a few “compatibility challenges” between some proposed lease lots and current Navy and Air Force training facilities.
A handful of proposed wind lots on the East Coast, offshore from North Carolina, Delaware, Virginia, and Maryland, overlap with bombing ranges and weapons stations the DoD uses to provide preliminary experience to their trainees. The department also noted that learning to sail ships around offshore wind turbines will also be challenging.
A spokesperson stated that the Pentagon “continues to work with the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, industry, and other stakeholders to identify the best locations for development.”
